Silajit is a doubtless oddity in Bengali music. Despite his apparent casual demeanor and disregard for conventional practices, Silajit feels nothing but absolute reverence when it comes to Rabindranath Tagore. That is precisely what has kept him away from what would be ‘fooling around with his music’ or his thoughts and ideas. Silajit is quite disgusted by the prevailing tendency of the Bengali artistes almost tampering with Tagore’s works, without any honest engagement. Instead of trying to grasp the vast repository of Tagore, mostly he is considered as a safe and secured culture buffer zone for an entire race. Bengalis have taken the easy way out of turning him into a mythic figure; Silajit argues and tackles questions with counter questions. After all, despite portraying Tagore as the essence and spirit of Bengali music, are we anywhere even near to understand the man and his thoughts?
