Flautist Subir Roy gives an enlightening presentation about his instrument of choice in a musical event called Mehfil supported by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS) recently. He begins with Indian Classical Music and the contributions of Pannalal Ghosh in establishing the flute as a Classical instrument. He goes on to explain the instrument’s evolution in cultural and musical terms. In doing so he puts on a display of flutes from various parts of the world highlighting the points of comparison as well as contrast! Interestingly, flutes used among tribes around the world seem to share a common spirit all over. He finally concludes by presenting the Transparent Flute which he made on his own and describes as his own way of contributing something back to music which gave him so much.
