National Award winning filmmaker Amitabh Chakraborty’s about to be released second feature film Cosmic Sex grew out of his much acclaimed earlier documentary Bishar Blues on fakir’s of Bengal. It explores the connection between sex and spirituality drawing on the Indian tradition of deha tattva(doctrine of the body) practiced by scores of marginal men and women even today. This secret practice whose ways and methods are passed on by the guru/ murshid (the spiritual teacher) to the devout disciple seeks the sublime in one’s own body by taming and reversing the natural flow of the primal force of human existence, the sexual energy. Seen in the context of present times, this age old practice can be viewed as a resolute negation of the acquisitive world whose tenets are primarily based on greed and hoarding of wealth. Cosmic Sex is Amitabh’s cinema of dissent, which delivers a contrasting cinematic palette for viewers and challenges the recent tendency in Indian films to paint everything in broad sweeping brush strokes.
