Talking about Kirtan, Suman Bhattacharya disagrees about it being a folk music form only. He strongly emphasizes on its origins rooted in the off shoots of Indian Classical music. He musically explains the points of similarities to strengthen his argument and in the process traces the geographical and socio-economic factors leading to the evolution of modern day Kirtan. He goes at length explaining the technicalities of the rhythm signatures involved in Kirtan. However, when it comes to performing live, he feels that owing to its captivating tunes and rhythm, the audience tends to ignore the deeper philosophical implications of Kirtan. Consequently, Bhattacharya always goes about explain the words in detail in the course of his performance.
