Niranjan Haldar, playing Sarinda with heart, soul and a bow…

Posted by Kaahon Desk On February 28, 2016

According to Niranjan Haldar, a Sarinda is one of the original bowing instruments along probably with Dotara, which is indigenous to folk music of Bengal. As he demonstrates, even the pattern of playing the scales on a Sarinda has a distinct colloquial ring to it. He describes in details the manufacturing aspects of the instruments and the wood used it and their resultant qualities. When it comes to playing the instrument in a song, he feels that instead of following any defined pattern or technique, one should follow the heart. On being asked, he plays and sings a song called “Sonar Moyna Pakhi”, one he considers closest to his heart. Even his soulful performance of the song proves his passionate involvement towards music.
